PUNE : The civic administration will urge the state government to ensure more than 8.19TMC water to meet the city’s annual requirement though guardian minister Girish Bapat on Friday said there would be adequate supply till July 2019 from the dams.
The Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) had on Thursday issued an order directing the civic body to use only 8.19 TMC water per year. It also dismissed the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) appeal for getting additional water.

“A fresh proposal will be sent to the state government next week for additional water. The proposal will have new details related to the city’s population and the increased demand of water,” PMC commissioner Saurabh Rao said during the general body meeting.

The civic administration is currently lifting around 1,350 MLD water. If the MWRRA’s directives are to be followed, the administration can lift around 635 MLD only.

Bapat said the dams have 20% less water because of this year’s scanty rain (see graphic). “A balance will be maintained while supplying water to the city areas and the rural parts. The PMC has to revamp the water distribution system to minimize losses,” he told reporters here.

Opposition party leaders said that it was surprising that water cuts looked imminent despite good rainfall. They added that the citizens would have to suffer because of the poor planning of the civic administration and the ruling party.
