PUNE: The mechanised sweeping of roads by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will start from Saturday.

“The PMC has procured the machines for mechanised sweeping. They will be handed over to the ward offices in a ceremony on Saturday and will be put to use immediately,” said a senior official of PMC.

The PMC had decided to introduce automatic sweeping machines for cleaning the roads. The first phase will cover three municipal zones. The standing committee of PMC had approved the proposal in July.

The proposal had stated that the project aims at providing new age machines for cleaning the roads. It will improve the quality of work. Apart from that it will also be a time saver.

The areas that were chosen for the first phase included Ahmednagar road, Sinhagad Road, Karve road, Hadapsar and Satara road.

PMC will spend Rs 48 crore on this project for the next five years. The contractor has planned to buy 9 road sweeper trucks, each will cost around Rs 78 lakh. A 28 % GST will have to be paid additionally.

The city has over 20,000 workers, who are directly or indirectly involved in the road cleaning or garbage disposal. According to PMC's data, the city has around 2500 km long roads. Nearly 2000 km are tar roads, while 500km are concreted.
