IIT-Madras in the dock for 'separate washbasin' for vegetarians

CHENNAI: IIT-Madras has come under flak for having set up separate entrances, separate washbasins and separate utensils for vegetarians and non-vegetarians in a mess on campus.
Dubbing it as a form of caste discrimination, Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle (APSC) said, "So-called upper caste households in India would usually have two entrances - one for the ‘upper castes’ and the other one in the rear for the 'impure' ones. A mess in IIT-Madras is now having the same system".
The student body shared pictures of posters stuck in the Himalaya mess building.
“What started as a demand for 'pure' vegetarian mess has become a fullfledged untouchability. IIT-M is trying to become a world-class institute, but the culture is still regressive in many aspects," APSC added.
In response, an IIT-M official said students on campus had the liberty to choose what they want to eat and IIT-M had no role in it. "It is up to the students. There is no basis to say that IIT-M practices caste discrimination," the official added.
