Residents of Chairman Vasudevan Nagar complain that parking of two-wheelers causes a great inconvenience to them

In June, the Greater Chennai Corporation removed a row of mechanic shops along the River Side Road at Chairman Vasudevan Nagar in Jhafferkhanpet.

They were encroaching upon more than half of the 20-feet road which is along the Adyar river.

But now, the encroachments have cropped up again along the road creating a lot of inconvenience to residents.

“The road has become further narrow. In addition to those shops, vehicles of their customers are also parked here. The encroachments have also made the place messy. They give wash to the vehicles from the road and the greased water is let into Adyar river.

As the road is always damp, the bitumen coating peels off. Moreover, all the spare materials and scrap are dumped along the road,” says S. Vijay Kumar, secretary, Chairman Vasudevan Nagar Residents Welfare Association.

Similar encroachments are there near the entrance of Jayabalan Street also.

On condition of anonymity, a few residents say that the two-wheelers are parked in front of their gates and they are not able to take their vehicles out.

The association has given a representation to Ashok Nagar police, K.K. Nagar police and the Greater Chennai Corporation seeking removal of the encroachments at the earliest. “Only after repeated representations by the association, the encroachments were removed six months ago. But the encroachments are making a comeback,”says Vijay Kumar.
