Former India Internationals Bedade & Johnson Among Applicants for Women’s Coach

New Delhi: With only one day remaining before the window to apply for the post of India’s next women’s coach closes on Friday, CricketNext can confirm that apart from former interim coach Ramesh Powar, 12 other candidates have applied for the job.

Among the overseas contenders are former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs, former England cricketers Owais Shah and Dimitri Mascarenhas, former Sri Lanka and Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore, former Australian first-class cricketer Dominic Thornely, Oman’s head coach Rakesh Sharma and Scottish cricket coach Colin Siller.

From India, apart from Powar, the applicants include former Indian cricketers Atul Bedade, David Johnson, Manoj Prabhakar, women’s Gargi Banerjee and the son of former legendary batsman ML Jaisimha, Vidyuth.

The salary offered for the post, which is believed to be in the range of Rs. 3 to 4 crore, is a big draw for a number of applicants which is still less than the 24 applications that the board had received before Powar was appointed the interim coach. In this list, Whatmore, aged 64, is the only one over Board’s criterion of being under the age of 60 years for this post.

“We have got a whole range of applicants for this job. We’ll forward these names to the ad-hoc committee and let them take a call who to invite for the interview,” a source close to the Committee of Administrators (CoA) told CricketNext on Thursday.

An ad-hoc committee featuring Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy will be conducting the interviews in Mumbai on December 20.
