Nationals leader to cop fine over social media post filmed while driving
WA Nationals leader Mia Davies will be issued a traffic infringement over a social media post she filmed while driving.
Police Commissioner Chris Dawson told Gareth Parker on 6PR's Morning Show Ms Davies broke the road rules filming the video that shows her speaking to the camera while behind the wheel.
"A couple of those offences were out of statute, time limitations," he said. "But she has received an infringement for one offence.
"I ordinarily don't talk about people getting individual infringements but that's a matter that's been outed in the public."
Commissioner Dawson said he was certain there were other state politicians who were on the receiving end of traffic infringements, but he wouldn't be commenting every time one was issued.
"But this is a matter of public interest," he said. "I think the important message I'd like to put out is it is an offence to drive and while you're driving it's not the time to be making videos and clips on your phone.
"I extend that to a broad, general message to say driving while distracted can be inherently dangerous.
"So, my message is: don't touch your phones, you have to only comply with the law and that is they're used for voice and only when they're in a cradle."
A spokesman for Ms Davies said she hadn't yet received an infringement and would not be commenting until it arrived.
Commissioner Dawson said Ms Davies would face three demerit points and a fine.
Labor MP Darren West had also posted a video to social media which was taken inside a moving car, but said a family member shot the footage while he was driving.
