TNN | Dec 14, 2018, 04:44 ISTAmravati: Melghat Tiger Project officials have nabbed two persons who were smuggling a rare Red Sand Boa (Mandul snake) from Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh to Paratwada in Amravati district.
Officials recovered a live Sand Boa from Sheikh Imran Sheikh Iqbal, 31, a resident of Gaurkheda Bazar in Chikhaldara, and Tanveer Khan Sharif Khan, 38, a resident of Dharni, on Tuesday. An SUV in which the duo was travelling was also seized.
Offences were registered under sections 9, 43, 44, 49, 50, 51 of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 against them. The accused have been placed in forest custody till Friday.
Melghat Tiger Project’s Googamal Wildlife Division got a tip-off that a four-wheeler was headed to Chikhaldara with smugglers carrying a sand boa. Chikhaldara RFO LA Aware along with his team and Melghat East Division RFO searched for the vehicle, a Scorpio (MH- 04/ BK 4751) in Chikhaldara and found it parked in PWD rest house premises.
When the vehicle started for Paratwada, the foresters intercepted it near Brahmani nullah near Aamzari under Chikhaldara circle.
“Smugglers sell Sand Boa, a non-venomous snake, for a whooping price as the snake is used in black magic rituals,” said Avinash Asanare, an expert on snakes.
