Visitors’ mobile phones, cash stolen in jail premises

Vadodara: Mobiles in Vadodara Central Jail are in such high demand that even the visitors’ phones are not safe anymore there.
Six mobile phones, Rs 3,500 cash and an ATM card belonging to family members of an inmate were stolen from the jail campus on Wednesday evening. The victim registered a case of theft at Raopura police station on Thursday evening.
Shehnazbanu Sheikh, who lives in Tandalja, had gone to the jail on Wednesday along with her family members and friends to meet her husband Mohammed Munaf. Munaf has been lodged in the jail in connection with a murder case.
Sheikh told police that before going to visitors’ room, she kept her purse outside the room. The purse had six mobile phones which belonged to her brother, sister-in-law and two friends, her sister-in-law’s ATM card and cash. She said that since the mobile phones are not allowed in the visiting area, she kept the phones outside in the purse.
After 15 minutes when all of them came outside, Sheikh could not find her purse. She asked around to the jail staff, but nobody had any idea about her purse following which she approached the cops on Thursday.
Police sources said that they have suspicion on some persons and the accused will be nabbed soon.
