They will line up along a distance of 43.5 km on January 1

The organising committee for the women’s wall to be formed on January 1 to uphold and protect the values of the reformation movement has decided to mobilise 3,00,000 women from various parts of the district for the event.

A meeting of the committee here on Wednesday decided to line up women along a distance of 43.5 km, stretching from Kadambattukonam on the northern border of the district to the Vellayambalam junction in the city. Presiding over the meeting, Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran said Kerala was the only State to have accorded equality for women in all spheres of activity.

He said the event had nothing to do with the Sabarimala issue that was now before the Supreme Court.

The Minister said the campaign was aimed at protecting the values of the reformation movement, ensuring equality of women and preventing the State from slipping into the dark ages. Decrying allegations that Christians had been recruited to the administration of Hindu temples, he said it was aimed at creating communal tension.

The meeting constituted an organising committee with the District Collector as convener and the District Information Officer and Social Justice Officer as joint conveners. It resolved to conduct meetings at the constituency- and local body-levels and organise house-to-house visits.

Trial run

The women’s wall is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. on January 1. A trial run will be held at 3.30 p.m. and the participants will be administered a pledge by social and cultural personalities.

Public meetings and cultural programmes will also be held.
