Woman killed in freight train collision

A woman and a teenager have died within hours of each other in separate car crashes in the state's north.

About 10.30am on Thursday, emergency services were called to a crash in Fredericksfield, roughly halfway between Bowen and Townsville, after a woman's car and a freight train collided.

A rescue helicopter flew to the Fredricksfield Road crash site to treat the woman for critical injuries but she could not be saved.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said she was trapped in the vehicle before firefighters could free her.

About 90 minutes earlier, a teenage driver died following a two-vehicle crash involving a truck with a semi-trailer at Feluga, south of Cairns.

The crash occurred on the Bruce Highway near the corner of Feluga Road about 9.10am.

The passenger of the vehicle, a woman in her 50s, was taken to Tully Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A third person, the driver of the truck, was also assessed by paramedics but was in a stable condition and had no injuries.

Police said the highway was closed for some time but had since been reopened.

The two fatal crashes came after a man died from his critical injuries in Gatton following a high-speed car crash and another man died after crashing into a fence at Durong, west of Kingaroy, only about two hours apart.

As of Wednesday, 230 people had died on Queensland roads in 2018, five fewer than the same period last year.
