A ceasefire agreement has been reached for a Yemeni sea port viewed as a critical lifeline for humanitarian aid into the ravaged country.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the deal during negotiations between the Iran-backed Houthi group and Saudi-backed government in Sweden.

Under the deal, forces belonging to each side would withdraw from the port city of Hodeidah.

Guterres also said the two sides had agreed to a wider negotiating framework for the next round of talks.

Hodeidah is under control of the Houthis.

Aid organizations have long feared that an assault on the city by the opposition would further erode efforts to stop the famine that the civil war has wrought.
