Polish Premier Asks for Confidence Vote Ahead of EU Summit

(Bloomberg) -- Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki asked parliament to confirm the mandate of his government, preempting a planned no-confidence vote filed by the opposition.

Morawiecki, in power for a year, is expected to win the motion as the ruling Law & Justice party he represents has a comfortable majority control in parliament. He’s been under opposition fire for his government’s standoff with the European Union over the rule of law.

“I’m requesting a confidence vote to confirm our mandate,” Morawiecki told lawmakers in Warsaw on Wednesday. “Tomorrow, and the day after, at the EU summit, I need to be certain of our mandate, of support from the parliamentary majority.”

EU leaders will meet in Brussels on Thursday to discuss Brexit and the bloc’s new budget.
