UK's May grilled in parliament ahead of no confidence vote

ROUGH CUT.

NO REPORTER NARRATION.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday (December 12) it would not be in Britain's national interest to hold a general election, after she was challenged by an opposition lawmaker on whether she would hold a second EU referendum or an election.

Speaking in parliament, May said, "I think that a general election at this point in time would not be in the national interest, in the middle of our negotiations." May earlier promised to fight for her job in a leadership challenge triggered by her Conservative Party, saying a change could jeopardise Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.

She will face a secret ballot between 1800 and 2000 GMT on Wednesday at the House of Commons, after which an announcement will be made as to whether she has faced a vote of no confidence.
