The strength of women in the Telangana Legislative Assembly after the 2018 Assembly elections declined from that of nine in the dissolved Assembly.
While three women candidates from Congress and six women candidates from TRS made it to the Telangana Assembly in the election held in 2014 , in the election held on December 7, only five got elected — two from Congress and three from TRS.
While the number of women candidates fielded by the major political parties itself was much less this time, the outcome of the election saw many women candidates unsuccessful at the hustings.
While Congress fielded 11 women candidates, its alliance partners TDP , TJS , and CPI fielded one woman candidate each. Overall the Congress-led alliance People’s Front fielded 14 women candidates while the BJP fielded 14 women candidates and Bahujan Left Front 11 candidates, including a transwoman candidate Chandramukhi from Goshamahal. The results announced so far saw only Congress candidates Seethakka (Mulug) and Sabitha Indra Reddy (Maheshwaram), TRS candidates G. Sunitha (Alair), Padma Devender Reddy (Medak) and Rekha Naik (Khanapur) have emerge victorious.
Prominent losers from the Congress party include N. Padmavathi (Kodad), Konda Surekha (Parkal), J. Gita Reddy (Zaheerabad), Sunitha Laxma Reddy (Narsapur) and D. K. Aruna (Gadwal). The lone woman candidate fielded by TDP Nandamuri Suhasini (Kukatpally) lost to TRS candidate M. Krishna Rao.
Kova Lakshmi of TRS lost narrowly to Congress candidate Athram Sakku in Asifabad.
