Marking a change in how Karavali Utsav is held, the district administration is holding this year’s 10-day-long festival with a theme to project the culture and heritage of the city. The utsav will start on December 21 at the Karavali Utsav Grounds and Kadri Park and culminate on the Panambur Beach on December 30.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S. said that events have been planned in a way that will project the heritage and culture of the city. “A concerted effort is being made to bring to light old heritage. We will show the importance of our (region’s) natural properties,” he said.

One among the events, Mr. Senthil said, was an open quiz on Karavali heritage at the Town Hall on December 26. He said that the event will be conducted by Q-Factory from Kerala which specialises in holding quiz programmes for a social cause. This quiz will test the knowledge of residents about their city. “I want people to participate in good number in this event,” he said.

Among other events include an exhibition of photographs of the city and of old artefacts. “A committee is working out the programmes and schedule. Announcements will be made shortly,” Mr. Senthil said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumara said that Karavali Utsav will begin on December 21 at 3.30 p.m. with a procession of more than 80 teams of folk artistes, from the Nehru Maidan to Karavali Utsav Grounds, where the 10-day-long exhibition will be inaugurated. Well-known music composer Guru Kiran will be the chief guest.

The Yuva Utsav will be held on December 27 and 28 at the Kadri Park where select teams from educational institutions in the district will perform. There will also be handball, Lagori, weightlifting competitions on December 28 and 29.

The Beach Festival will be held on the Panambur Beach from December 28 to December 30. Among the events at the Beach Festival include creation of sand artefacts, surfing exhibition, food festival and a music show by well-known music director Manikant Kadri. The valedictory function of the utsav will be held on the beach in which Karavali Gaurava Award will be presented, Mr. Kumara said.
