A-League expansion day: What happens now?
Canberra's A-League bid should learn its fate following a Football Federation Australia board meeting on Wednesday afternoon. These are the three ways it can pan out from here:
CANBERRA WINS EXPANSION LICENCE
Canberra complete the fairytale and are handed an expansion licence 10 years after getting pipped at the post by the Western Sydney Wanderers.
They'll be one of two teams and will likely join the A-League from the 2020-21 season. Canberra will immediately go to work finding a coach and then start building their roster.
CANBERRA DENIED EXPANSION LICENCE
The dream is crushed and Canberra are burned for the second time in 10 years as the FFA opt to expand into the existing markets of Sydney and Melbourne.
Canberra will turn their attention to the Wellington Phoenix who have been set metrics to extend their licence past next season. Canberra could hang tough and replace the Phoenix.
EXPANSION DECISION DELAYED
The FFA push back a final decision for the second time in six weeks and further frustrate fans by dragging the saga past the two-year mark.
If the board ask for more time it will definitely rule out expansion for next season and two bids have said another delay will spell the end of their campaign. Canberra is not one of those.
