1. Free water facility in all hotels of Thiruvananthapuram

Water is the driving force of all nature, and what if the same water becomes the reason for destruction? Yes, you heard it right! The habit of purchasing water bottles and dumping them in public space is one of the reasons that is disturbing the ecological balance of the environment. In a bid to cut down the purchase and make the city green, the district administration of Thiruvananthapuram has coined a new initiative that will involve more than 5000 registered hotels of the district.

2. What is the idea?

According to representatives of Kerala Hotels and Restaurants Association (KHRA), state hotels have agreed to provide water free of cost to the public. The idea was proposed by District Collector K Vasuki during a meeting held at the collectorate. According to this concept, people can refill their water bottles at the registered hotels of the state for free of cost.

3. How will the concept be executed?

To execute this noble idea, water cans will be placed outside every hotel, and people will be allowed to refill their water bottles free of cost. Also, the meeting focused on the idea of banning the sale of plastic straws and spoons along with juices and desserts.

4. Why this initiative has been made?

According to the members of KHRA, the move has been out of many humanitarian initiatives. This initiative will also include ‘Annam Punyam,’ under which free food coupons will be distributed to beat hunger in the district.

5. The drawbacks

It has been reported that during the meeting, the topic of banning plastic plates and bags was also raised, but was not approved by the KHRA members, keeping the unavailability of eco-friendly alternatives as a major glitch.
