Months after the Nirmala Devi sex scandal rocked the Madurai Kamaraj University, the institution finds itself in trouble again with a woman research scholar claiming that she was sexually harassed by a professor.

Madurai:
According to sources, the research scholar, who hails from Kerala, approached the internal complaints committee with her complaint last Friday and underwent medical treatment.
According to sources privy to her complaint, the woman alleged that the professor, who heads the centre for film and electronic media studies, had misbehaved with her. The woman also claimed that the professor, who served as her guide, had followed her for about six months.
However, the professor has denied any such incident and said he has evidence to prove his innocence. A source close to him said the scholar, who joined last October, was questioned after being found irregular to class.
“She took leave without prior permission and attended classes for only 20 days between August and November this year. When she was asked about her absence on consistent days through e-mail, she replied irresponsibly,” the source said, adding that the woman had also tampered with the attendance register in the hostel.
When contacted, MKU registrar V Chinniah said the internal complaints committee has summoned both the professor and the research scholar for an enquiry to ascertain the truth.
“They will appear before the committee at 3 pm on Wednesday,” the registrar said.
