Nonagenarian Swaminathan, in his letter, had praised the Prime Minister for his initiative in ending the practice of “Muthalaq” or Triple Talaq. Swaminathan had added that by doing so, “Shri Narendra Modi had earned the appreciation of crores of Muslim women.” The PM, in his response, stressed on equal rights and justice for women and said that he has always laid emphasis on ensuring gender equality in all sections of the society.
In his reply to Swaminathan, the Prime Minister said: “we are living in an age of women-led development. In this transformative era, it is indeed a contradiction to live with retrograde conventions which hinder the equality of women.”
The Prime Minister also added that endeavours to ensure social justice to all sections of society will continue. “We must ensure an open society free from discriminations of all kinds that may hamper the aspirations of our citizens,” the Prime Minister said.
