8-year jail for shoving daughter’s face on stove

CHANDIGARH: A local court has sentenced a 40-year-old resident of Sector 37 to eightyear jail term for shoving his 16-year-old daughter’s face on a burning gas stove after an argument over parantha.

The court of additional district and sessions judge Poonam R Joshi convicted Sinder Pal, a resident of Sector 37 under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He has also been fined Rs 10,000.


On April 12, police had received a complaint through the child and women helpline. The girl, Sanjana, a Class X student, had received burns on her neck and her hair was also burnt. Sanjana lives with her parents and brother.


She had stated her father was drunk at that time. On the night on April 11, at around 9 pm, her father arrived home in an inebriated condition. Sinder Pal asked her to make a parantha for him. She replied that she was making dinner for her brother and mother and would make the “parantha” later.


Sinder Pal left the kitchen towards the bathroom but returned and hit the girl on her head and then pulled her from her hair and then shoved her face on top of the stove flame. The girl then raised started crying, prompting her mother to push Sinder Pal away, but Sanjana lost some of her hair and received burns on her neck. The girl had also stated to the police that her father was in the habit of hitting her when drunk. She then informed the child and women helpline on April 12, who the approached the girl and informed the police. The girl was taken to Government Multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16.
