A 30-year-old madrassa teacher at Gevrai Tanda on the outskirts of Aurangabad was brutally stabbed by men wielding knives used by butchers after he allegedly slapped a student.
The suspects are relatives of the 11-year-old boy whom the teacher had slapped on Sunday as he had failed to do the homework.
Two of the 10 accused in the FIR, Altaf Akbar Pathan and Shahrukh Akbar Shaikh, were arrested and produced in court on Tuesday, only to be remanded in police custody. The key suspect and others are on the run.
Chikalthana police in Aurangabad rural, under whose jurisdiction this area falls, are investigating.
The suspects allegedly attacked even the father of the teacher and his two brothers who tried to intervene.
All the injured are being treated at Government Medical College and Hospital. There are stab wounds on their stomach, chest and back, police said.
Police accessed CCTV footage that showed the men attacking with knives used in cutting up the meat of buffaloes. The accused, police say, run a meat business. They have been charged with attempt to murder, voluntarily causing grievous hurt using sharp-edged weapons and rioting. The Arms Act and Maharashtra Police Act have also been slapped on the 10 suspects named in the FIR.
Aurangabad superintendent of police Arti Singh said, “This is a serious incident. A detailed report is awaited.”
Chikalthana’s assistant inspector Satyajit Taitwale said it started with the boy returning home from the madrassa on Sunday, to describe to his parents the punishment meted out to him by his teacher for failure to finish homework.
“Members of his family soon set out to teach the teacher a lesson. Just as he was being hunted down, the teacher managed to call his 55-year-old father. Soon, his father, accompanied by the teacher’s two brothers, arrived at the madrassa,” he officer.
“The teacher, his father and brothers were just getting out of the madrassa on Sunday when the men set upon them with knives. Alert villagers, however, rescued the teacher and his kin and took them to the government hospital.”
Police said the teacher had joined work at the madrassa about six months ago. Some villagers and members of the management of the madrassa told TOI that the teacher was being unfairly targeted by rogue elements in the village.
