NEW DELHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi Tuesday thanked people and party workers for party's good performance in three states of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh while asserting that the poll outcome raised "questions" on the Modi government's policies.

He also said it was a clear message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that people are not happy with decisions, including demonetisation and those pertaining to farmers and youth.

"It's now time for change. We are going to provide these three states with a vision for overall development," Gandhi said and added that they would have liked to do better in Telangana.

Gandhi was named to lead the Congress exactly a year ago and took over the charge from his mother Sonia Gandhi a few days later.

In a press conference, addressing his opponents who are trailing Congress, the party chief said that it is time for change.

"The parties who have ruled before us, I would like to thank them for the work they have done in the respective states. But it was time for change and the Congress has won," he said.

Congratulating the party workers, Gandhi said that a big responsibility lies ahead.

"In the states where we have lost, I would like to congratulate the parties who have won. For every Congress worker who has supported the party in these difficult times, I would like to say that this victory is a big responsibility. This is a victory of Congress workers, small traders, farmers," said the party president.

When asked if Congress' victory means a 'BJP-mukt-Bharat', Gandhi said that Congress does not want to get rid of anyone.

"We do not want to rid India of anybody. We have defeated our opponents and we will defeat them again. We don't want to erase anybody from India,"he said.

"Narendra Modi had a huge opportunity. Five years ago he was given a huge mandate but he refused to listen to the heart of people, of the farmers and the traders. I have learned what not to do from Narendra Modi," said the Congress president.
