NEW DELHI: Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s clean sweep of Telangana has put another regional player in the non-aligned bloc that is ideologically agnostic and could tilt the scale in a close contest between UPA and NDA.

TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao joins BJD’s Naveen Patnaik, the Odisha chief minister and YSR Congress of Jaganmohan Reddy who is likely to win seats in Andhra Pradesh. Others in such mix could only be minor players like PDP of J&K, INLD factions in Haryana and if mega star Rajnikanth wins some seats in Tamil Nadu. These are parties which have not yet joined either of the two rival fronts and are willing to swing either way based on their political interest.

Telangana sends 17 MPs to the Lok Sabha. At present, K Chandra Sekhar Rao-led TRS has 11 members in the House and if it repeats its performance, the Telangana party will have a bigger role. “We are going to play a very crucial role in the national politics...and we will show...we will give a new definition to the national political scenario,” KCR said after Tuesday’s result.

Similarly, with indications of YSR Congress Party likely to better its performance in 2019 from its present strength of three seats in the Lok Sabha, there is speculation that the Jaganmohan Reddy-led party may have a bigger say at the Centre. In the case of Odisha, despite its four terms in power, Biju Janata Dal would go all out to win maximum number of seats. Currently, Naveen Patnaik has 20 MPs in the Lok Sabha.

Political analysts say these parties would weigh their options for alliance and wait for the right opportunity, most likely after the polls.
