BHATINDA: A day after the world commemorated the universal declaration of human rights, the India chapter of the Pakistan India People’s Forum for Peace & Democracy(PIPFPD) has made an appeal to Pakistani authorities and Prime Minister Imran Khan to release software engineer from Mumbai Hamid Ansari on the December 16, 2018 when he completes the jail term.
Hamid Ansari's immediate release will send a positive message as it will come in the background of the opening up of the Kartarpur Corridor. Many campaigners for Hamid’s release have consistently maintained that while Hamid Ansari violated the Passport Act, he is innocent of the kind of charges that were made against him. He entered Pakistan illegally to meet his love in Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in November 2012.
Hamid was sentenced to three years sentence on December 15, 2015 though was in custody for a long while. Hamid’s immediate family consisting of his parents and brother have been in turmoil for the past several years. His mother retired as a Professor. His father was a banker and now practises as a lawyer. Elder brother is a dental surgeon.
PIPFPD India co-chairpersons Syeda Hameed, Tapan Bose and general secretary Vijayan MJ in a press release issued on Tuesday said that Peshawar high court on August 7, 2018 had directed authorities concerned to deport Hamid immediately after completion of his sentence, if he is not required for any other case. We request authorities to hand over Hamid to Indian high commission officials on the day of completion of his sentence. We request that he should be released and repatriated the same day or next day via Wagah border.
We laud Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for his valuable gestures so far made towards making peace with India and in the region and appeal to him to make sure that Hamid’s case too should be treated on humanitarian grounds, they said.
