BERHAMPUR: Police arrested a 50-year-old man on Sunday for allegedly killing his daughter’s mother-in-law at Buguda in Ganjam district on Saturday. The accused was identified as Basant Sahu of Pattadhara under Jagannath Prasad police station. The accused killed Kanaka Sahu, 50, a murder accused, by silting her throat while she was alone in the house. Kanaka had earlier allegedly killed her daughter-in-law (Basant’s daughter).

Police seized the motorbike and the knife used to kill the old woman. “The knife was seized from the nearby Kholakholi jungle as Basant had dumped the weapon in the jungle after committing murder,” said sub- divisional police officer (SDPO), Bhanjanagara, Utkal Keshari Das.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused killed Kanaka to take revenge of his daughter’s murder. Police claimed the accused confessed to the murder and told he took revenge for his daughter’s murder. His daughter, Bharati, who had married to Jagannath, the elder son of Kanaka, was allegedly killed by her in-laws, including Kanaka, on October 30 last year. In the in-laws had throttled Bharati to death, said police. The in-laws killed Bharati after torturing her for days, police said. Kanaka was released from the jail on bail six months ago.

Kanaka’s husband Kabiraja found her lying in the pool of blood and informed police. He suspected Basant might have killed his wife.
