HC allows Traffic Ramasamy to file additional affidavit

The Madras High Court was told on Monday that even residents of Poes Garden were against the conversion of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s residence into a memorial.

Petitioner and activist Traffic Ramasamy wanted the court to restrain the State government from establishing a memorial for Jayalalithaa at her residence, Veda Nilayam.

Mr. Ramasamy said Poes Garden residents had unanimously recorded their opposition to the August 2017 decision of the government.

Mr. Ramasamy said this was evident at a social impact assessment (SIA), performed by the Chennai Collectorate at the Chokkalingam Nagar in Teynampet on Saturday.

He pleaded the court permit him to file an additional affidavit .

Posting the plea to December 20, the Division Bench of Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice Anita Sumanth allowed Mr. Ramasamy to file an additional affidavit.

Mr. Ramasamy argued that the Tamil Nadu government should not be allowed to build a memorial for Jayalalithaa as she was “declared a convict in the disproportionate assets case by the Supreme Court.”

He approached the court after a recent move by the government to survey the property and complete acquisition of the residence.
