Netflix has given the green light to a scripted series about the life of iconic Tejano pop star Selena Quintanilla, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cast, premiere date, episode count and even episode length are not yet set, but it will be written and executive-produced by Star's Moisés Zamora. Other executive producers include Selena's father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and sister Suzette Quintanilla, and the story will be as much about the Quintanilla family as it is about Selena, who became the biggest Latin pop star of the '90s but was tragically murdered by the president of her fan club in 1995 at age 23.

"Selena and the entire Quintanilla family are an inspiration to many and especially to me, a millennial of the same heritage," EP Jaime Davila said in a statement. "Selena's career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star."

This will be the second biographic work based on the life of Selena; the 1997 biopic Selena made Jennifer Lopez a star. The series will presumably try to do the same for whatever young singer-actress lands the role. A separate series was in the works in 2016 from Chris Perez, Selena's husband, but that was spiked when Abraham Quintanilla sued because the Quintanilla family controls Selena's estate. Perez does not have an EP credit on the Netflix series, according to THR.
