Surat: A 22-year-old electrical engineer, who was about to begin his career, is fighting for life after suffering severe injuries in a hit-and-run that took place on Saturday.
Surprisingly, police did not register the offence for two days after the accident and it was only on Monday that the complaint was lodged. The car and its driver are yet to be identified.

Yash Patel, a resident of Jahangirpura, was out for morning walk on the road near Essar petrol pump at around 5am when a speeding car knocked him from behind. Patel was flung in air and suffered serious injuries. He was rushed to New Civil Hospital (NCH) and later shifted to a private hospital where he is currently under treatment.

The family was not aware about the accident and they started searching for him at around 7 am when Patel did not return home. His father Raju, a health worker in Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), went to search for him but failed to locate him. The family then informed relatives, friends and neighbours and sought help. They all started search for Patel in different directions.

“While examining CCTV footages, we found that he went on his regular route for walk. When we reached the petrol pump, they informed us that a young man was knocked by a car during early morning and they called 108 ambulance. We went to NCH and found Yash,” Raju told TOI.

“Yash is yet to regain consciousness. Doctors informed us that there is swelling in brain due to the injury. He suffered fracture in shoulder and rib cage,” said Raju.

Police went to the hospital and returned informing the hospital authorities to call them when Patel regain consciousness. It was only after the family approached police that a complaint was lodged early on Monday.

“There is no negligence on part of police. Police visited the hospital, but since the victim was unconscious and his family members were not present, we could not get details of the accident,” said a police officer at Jahangirpur police station. Cops could not explain that why police did not register a case of hit-and-run and started investigation.

“We have recovered the CCTV footages and attempts are being made to develop the video to identify the car’s number,” said police.
