ALLAHABAD: Three women were killed and five others were missing after a boat carrying 14 persons capsized in the river Yamuna near Mankameshwar temple in Kydganj area of Allahabad on Monday evening.

The deceased were identified as Bhagabai (65), Radhabai (55), Laxmibai (55). Those missing have been identified as Digambar (72), Balaji (50), Ramakant (40), Deviram (55) and Bhojraj (70).

Six persons including Jyotibala, Sunita Devidas, Angad Narayan, Keshav Gyanowa, Manohar Vaishya and Meenakshi were rescued who are currently undergoing treatment at SRN hospital.

Overcrowding and poor condition of the boat were said to be the reason behind the tragic incident. However, the exact reason is still unknown.


SSP Nitin Tiwari said that three women were killed and five others were missing till reports last came in.


SP (city) Brijesh Kumar Srivastava said a group from Maharashtra that had come to immerse the ashes of a dead relative was on the boat when it capsized.


He added that while nine of them managed to swim to safety, five others were missing. Teams of JAL police and swimmers were on their task to locate them. Meanwhile, teams of NERF and para military personnel have too joined search operation to locate missing persons.
