CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu will soon have a mind museum, dedicated to the history of mental health treatment in the country. It is going to be set up as a gallery inside the Egmore museum in Chennai. Speaking at an event in the city on Sunday, Ma Foi K. Pandiarajan, minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture, made the announcement.
“We intend to set up this gallery in Egmore museum. There are currently 54 galleries inside and this will be the 55th gallery,” said the minister.
He further added that the gallery would help educate people about the history of mental health, its treatment and how it has evolved over the years.
“Mental health is the most important factor influencing our lives. From tying up people with mental illness in chains and imprisoning them between four walls to finding therapy and reintegrating them with the society, we have come a long way. It is important that we showcase the changes and keep getting better,” he said.
“The gallery will be set up along the lines of a mental health museum in Istanbul. We are currently deciding on other processes such as funding and sourcing materials,” said the minister.
He said that they will also rope in NGOs working in the field of mental health to set up the gallery.
