THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP Kerala unit has called for a dawn-to-dusk harthal in Thiruvananthapuram district on Tuesday in protest against police action on party workers in front of the secretariat here on Monday.
The state capital witnessed tense scenes after BJP workers tried to break the police barricade. BJP has organised protest marches across Kerala on Monday demanding the state government's immediate attention to the demand raised by the party for the withdrawal of section 144 orders clamped at Sabarimala.
With this demand, BJP state general secretary A N Radhakrishnan has been observing an indefinite fast in front of state secretariat for the last eight days.
BJP workers tried to break the police barricade, forcing police to fire water canon and hurl tear gas shells at the protesters. The tension escalated further when stones were pelted and a woman worker was wounded in the stone pelting. The police moved very close to the satyagraha venue of A N Radhakrishnan, but further violence was averted after leaders pacified the cadres.
BJP district president S Suresh said the police action against the workers and leaders was highly objectionable and hence the harthal call. Meanwhile, the health condition of A N Radhakrishnan has deteriorated and a medical team has advised to shift him to hospital.
BJP district president S Suresh said that harthal will be held from 6am to 6pm on Tuesday.
