NEW DELHI: The capital’s angry streets claimed yet another life early Monday morning when a confrontation triggered by a 21-year-old motocyclist accidentally brushing against a parked i20 at east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar ended with one of the car’s occupants whipping out a pistol and shooting the youth dead.
The assailant also shot at two other youths accompanying the victim, Yogesh, but missed them narrowly before escaping, police said. Yogesh was hit in the abdomen and thigh, and died before reaching a hospital, police said.
Yogesh had come to a 24x7 store at Acharya Niketan market past midnight to buy juice for a cousin who was admitted in Kukreja Hospital in the locality. As he was parking the bike, it touched the side-view mirror of an i20 in which two men were allegedly drinking.
Witnesses said the men got out and began arguing with Yogesh. It soon turned into a fight and bystanders had to separate the two sides. One of the men then went into the store to buy something. The fight, however, resumed after a few minutes and the men thrashed Yogesh.
After being assaulted, Yogesh allegedly threw a stone at the car. One of the two men, who appeared drunk, then whipped out a pistol and fired at him. People inside the store, including Yogesh’s friend Golu and cousin Aman who had accompanied him, rushed out on hearing the gunshots and saw Yogesh lying in a pool of blood. The assailant also shot at the two youths, firing five rounds in all. Seeing a huge crowd gather, the men then drove away without any resistance.
The killing was captured on the store’s CCTV cameras. Cops suspect the two men were hardened criminals. A manhunt has been launched to nab them.
Before coming to the store around 12.30am, Yogesh, Golu and Aman had met another friend and celebrated his birthday, police said. The police rushed to the spot around 12.45am after receiving a PCR call made by Golu. They took Yogesh to the hospital but he was desections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of IPC and sections of Arms Act has been registered at the Pandav Nagar police station and investigation is underway,” said Pankaj Singh, DCP (east).
Preliminary investigation has indicated that the accused may be residents of east Delhi or Noida. Teams are trying to track their movements with help from CCTV cameras in the neighbourhood.
Police have seized camera footage from inside as well as outside the store in which the suspects are clearly seen.
The grabs have been circulated among beat officers for identification, sources said. Police have also seized two “quarter” bottles of liquor, a pair of shoes and a cigarette lighter from the spot.
