Powai Cyclothon encourages youth to cycle to fight climate change

MUMBAI: A huge group of young and old alike participated in the Green Revolution Chain Cyclothon at Powai on Sunday to fight climate change and pollution, specially at the Powai Lake.

"You’re probably well aware of cycling's numerous benefits. But its impact on the planet can make life cleaner for all people, not just individuals aiming for a healthier lifestyle. If the global temperature rises by 1.5 degrees C or more by 2030, the worldwide risk of events like extreme droughts, wildfires, and floods will increase exponentially," said Tanya Satish, CEO of Green Revolution Chain Cyclothon and brand ambassador of Young Environmentalists NGO.

Over 500 people had turned up at the Hiranandani Gardens in Powai to cycle around the area and also send out the serious message about climate change.

"If 20% of people used bicycles instead of cars for short trips in the congested city, fewer tons of carbon dioxide would be emitted. We also encourage the youth and younger generation to cycle to school and close localities on daily basis. We donate old cycles to the underprevilged students so please help us recycle your cycles," added Tanya. She is a certified Climate Reality leader in Brazil, and has also trained under the former vice president of USA, Al Gore, on community social impact and climate change.

Growing cities like Navi Mumbai and Thane are also encouraging citizens to push the pedals by setting up dedicated cycle tracks and thereby reduce the carbon footprints.
