The award ceremony took place in Lisbon, Portugal, unveiling the globe’s finest travel brands. During the event, the Inca country was awarded two other accolades: World’s Leading Culinary Destination —for the seventh time— and World’s Leading Cultural Destination.
Back in September, WTA announced South America’s 2018 winners. On that occasion, Peru won four awards: Leading Tourist Attraction, Leading Culinary Destination, Leading Cultural Destination, and Leading Tourist Board.
Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.
Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel, located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, on a mountain ridge 2,430 metres above sea level.
