Assembly Elections 2018

Election results 2018 tomorrow: Who will be king in MP, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram?

The results of the last legislative assembly elections held in 2018 will be declared tomorrow, months ahead of a general election due by May next year.

Who will be smiling after the last voted is counted? The BJP or the Congress? (Photos: Twitter/Narendra Modi and Congress)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Elections were held in November and December
  • Polls widely seen as pre-2019 semi-final
  • India Today exit poll points to major wins for Congress

Anxious to know the assembly election results? Well, you don't have to wait much longer. Votes polled in five states, including three governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP, will be counted tomorrow -- December 11 -- on what promises to be a day of high drama. And if the India Today-Axis My India exit poll numbers hold, the Congress will be celebrating wins in at least two states: Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

The exit poll predicted a tight race between the Congress and the BJP in Madhya Pradesh (with a slight advantage for the Grand Old Party), an easy win for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi in Telangana, and a majority (if not a win) for the Mizo National Front in Mizoram. (What about the poll of exit polls? Read here.)

The Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan election results will be closely watched, as the main contenders in these races -- the BJP and the Congress -- will cross swords again when India elects a new Lok Sabha next year. Both parties will be eager to have the momentum on their side.

While the Congress is the challenger in the trio of Hindi belt states, it is currently in power in Mizoram. Rahul Gandhi's party has seen its reach on India's political map shrink, and will be desperate to not just hold on to the states it governs, but add more to the tally.
