Village admin officers strike demanding basic facilities
tnn | Dec 11, 2018, 00:35 ISTCoimbatore: A total of 165 village administrative officers (VAOs) in the district launched an indefinite strike on Monday.
The group, led by the district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Village Administrative Officers Association (TNVAOA), K Saravanan, conducted a protest in front of the Alandurai town panchayat office. “We are not protesting for salary hike but for our rights. Most of the VAO offices do not have even basic facilities like electricity, drinking water and toilets. We want the government to provide basic amenities,” said Saravanan.
As the government did not pay for the internet connection to issue online certificates, VAOs are forced to spend their own money, the union leader said. “Our protest, which we call ‘Towards the People’, will reach out to villagers and explain our demands. We will conduct protests in the 10 taluks in Coimbatore on Tuesday and Wednesday and conduct protest in front of taluk offices on Thursday and Friday. In the third phase of the protest, we will conduct a procession towards the collectorate on next Monday and Tuesday,” said Saravanan.
As many as 7,000 VAOs are participating in the indefinite strike across the state.
