NAVI MUMBAI: A major fire broke out in the mangroves near Vashi railway station in Navi Mumbai on Monday evening.

A thick smoke billowing over the mangroves was first noticed by commuters at the railway station, who later informed the fire brigade.

A fire engine from Vashi fire station arrived at the spot at 6.35 pm to control the fire. The presence of waste materials like thermocol, plastic etc is said to have further fuelled the fire.

"Our forest personnel have also reached the site to check the situation. After the fire is brought under control, we will investigate how it was started and then take action," said the range forest officer (RFO) Prakash Chaudhari.

Just last week, there was a major blaze in the mangroves off the Palm Beach Road in Nerul. Here too, the presence of thermocol pieces had added to the fire in the wetland.
