MARGAO: The newborn found abandoned at Navelim, is fit for discharge from the Hospicio, Margao, where she was admitted by the police soon after she was recovered from the roadside on December 2.

Police sources said the health of the infant was reportedly stable and she is to be discharged from the hospital on Monday. Subsequent to her discharge, she is likely to be admitted at an orphanage, in accordance with the approval obtained from the state child welfare committee.

“The state is mandated to take care of the abandoned baby until it is declared fit for adoption. There are guidelines laid down by CARA (Central Adoption Resource Authority), a statutory body of the ministry of women and child development, government of India with regards to adoption of such children,” Auda Viegas, women rights activist, said.

CARA primarily deals with adoption of orphan, abandoned and surrendered children.
