Wife of former municipal chairman Jamal Manakkadan and Congress councillor Rukhia Jamal was sworn in as the chairperson of Kalamassery municipality on Monday. She replaces Jessy Peter of the Congress, who stepped down from the post in November following an agreement with the Congress party leadership.
Ms. Jamal bagged 27 votes in the election to the chairperson’s post against CPI(M)’s Henny Baby, who received 15 votes. The new chairperson took charge after about three years of infighting within the Congress party. Though the Congress party district leadership asked the former chairperson to step down after three years on November 8, there was some delay as she waited for the party’s State leadership’s view on the matter.
