A motorcyclist allegedly hurled abuse at a fellow motorist before smashing two windows in a violent road rage attack.

The male motorcycle rider followed the victim, who was driving a work van, in Warrnambool, Victoria, on Thursday, police said. 

Officers allege the attack occurred after the rider caused the victim to break suddenly to avoid a collision on Banyan Street at about 12pm.

The rider then allegedly screamed abuse at the van driver and spat in his face. 

The victim continued to drive on, but was met at the next roundabout.

The rider allegedly approached the victim's van and smashed two of the windows. 

Police believe the rider may have had encounters with pedestrians earlier when he was seen in the area riding on a footpath.

They have released an image of a man to assist with their enquiries.
