Tough break as Maddinson heads to hospital after Richardson bouncer
Nic Maddinson’s return to the cricket spotlight has been rudely interrupted with the former Test batsman suffering a suspected broken arm while batting for Victoria.
Only two days after making a sublime century in his first Sheffield Shield game for the Vics since moving from NSW, Maddinson was struck high on the right arm, near the wrist, by a bouncer from West Australian speedster Jhye Richardson.
Maddinson, 26, immediately winced, and upon examination by team medical staff a large bump on the batsman’s arm was revealed on the MCG big screen.
He retired hurt on 10, with an early tea taken. Victoria were 0-13 with four sessions remaining in the match, leading by 141 runs after Jon Holland took 5-66 earlier in the day as WA were bowled out for 296.
Maddinson was being taken for scans on Sunday afternoon, with Victoria set to provide an update later in the day.
It looms as a cruel blow for Maddinson, who moved to Melbourne after being dumped by NSW at the end of last season and had to fight his way into the Victorian setup, having initially missed a contract with his new state.
The blow comes less than a fortnight from the start of the Big Bash League season where Maddinson - who has played T20 cricket for Australia this year - was set to play a big role for the Melbourne Stars.
