Tuesday TV: Fresh Blood Pilot Season: Be Your Own Boss, My Family and the Galapagos, Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas Special
FRESH BLOOD PILOT SEASON: BE YOUR OWN BOSS
★★
9.30pm, ABC Comedy
The idea is fantastic: sponsored by a regional council initiative, three small businesses ("Fit Like Pink" exercise classes, L'il Phoenix Theatre Co. anti-bullying workshops, and Free Range Pet Paradise) operate out of a shopping arcade. Playing all the parts are co-creators Becky Lucas and newcomer Cameron James. The visual gags are great but the sketches tend to overstay their welcome. Lucas' character work is yet to entirely break free of her hugely successful stand-up persona.
MY FAMILY AND THE GALAPAGOS
★★★½
8.30pm, ABC
The title may reference Gerald Durrell but the experience that British marine biologist Monty Hall has given his wife and two small daughters on these ecologically unique islands is about more than a cultural exchange. Throughout, the focus has been on the fauna here as canaries down the mineshaft of the natural world. The presence of Hall's children highlights the pressing need to preserve it for the people of the future. In this penultimate episode, they swim with endangered sharks.
MRS BROWN'S BOYS CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
Double episode ★★★★
8.30pm, Seven
The female impersonator treads a shaky line these days. The spectacle of a man wearing lady's things shouldn't be funny enough on its own any more. That's where Brendan O'Carroll has always got his Irish mammy just right. Sure, she's a caricature of a disgruntled granny, and handy with a sexual innuendo, but when all the slapstick's said and done, she's got a heart that can knock the wind out of you. These year-old festive episodes haven't gone off at all.
