Two days after a theft accused escaped from the prison cell of the Central Police station after pouring curry into the eyes of a policeman on duty, two civil police officers were suspended, while a departmental inquiry was ordered against the Station House Officer.
District Police Chief (Kochi City) M.P. Dinesh confirmed the development on Friday night even as the hunt for the accused continued.
He said the police officers should have been more vigilant.
Pramod and Ratheesh were the two CPOs who were placed under suspension even as Inspector and Station House Officer A. Ananthalal faces the inquiry.
Tafseer Darvesh, 21, of Ponnani in Malappuram, an accused in a case registered in connection with a serial theft on Broadway and areas near the Ernakulam market a couple of months ago, had jumped the cell in the early hours of Wednesday.
Though co-accused and cellmate Muhammed Aslam, 19, also from Ponnani, had joined in the assault of the policeman, he could not escape.
