FALL RIVER - He knows it's early, but it still wasn't the debut Durfee girls' basketball coach Marcel Smith was looking for.

Smith, in his first season as head coach of the Hilltoppers, saw his team struggle out of the gate and fall 56-35 to visiting Old Rochester on Friday night.

"It's our first game, no scrimmages and we lost our entire starting five from last year," Smith said. "For most of these kids, the varsity experience isn't really there yet."

The Bulldogs held a 16-6 lead after one and led 32-18 at the break as Durfee committed 19 first-half turnovers and struggled shooting from the floor (6-for-26).

A bright spot for the Hilltoppers was the play off the bench by junior Diamond Gerald, who finished as the game's high scorer with 13 points.

"Diamond came off the bench and played very well," Smith said. "She's got an asthma issue and shows a little trepidation, but she looked pretty good tonight."

The Bulldogs broke the game wide open in the third quarter by outscoring the Toppers 14-5 and taking a 46-23 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mackenzie Carreiro finished with eight points for the Hilltoppers.

Old Rochester's balanced scoring attack was led by Logan Fernandes, who finished with 10 points. Mary Butler and Ashley Soares each finished with nine points.
