Trump appoints new AG, chief of staff set to resign

Read MoreWASHINGTON: A former Fox news host who was pitchforked to the state department spokesperson’s job has been elevated as US ambassador to the United Nations as the revolving door that has characterised US President Trump’s administration continues to churn out personnel rapidly.
In what is seen as a nod to personality rather than substance, Trump promoted Heather Nauert, a Fox news presenter, to a cabinet post held by eminences such as former President George H W Bush, who recently passed away, former secretary of state Madeleine Albright, and most recently South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. The move is being widely panned because Nauert is seen as lacking qualifications, and like Trump, having a poor grasp of history — such as citing D-Day as the height of US—German relations.
Trump also announced on Friday he is nominating William Barr, a former Attorney General under Bush Sr, to head the justice department, even as he continued to rail against FBI special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into his campaign’s alleged Russian collusion and Moscow’s interference in US elections. The president continued to berate senior officials of his own justice department and Mueller (who reports to them) on Friday, alleging that they were bearing down on his supporters while sparing Democratic party sympathisers.
“We will be doing a major Counter Report to the Mueller Report. This should never again be allowed to happen to a future President of the United States!” Trump tweeted on Friday amid high anticipation that the special counsel is poised to release more findings from his investigations which the President and his minions see as a witchhunt.
There were also reports on Friday about the imminent exit from the Trump team of his chief of staff John Kelly, whom the president has reportedly sidelined. Vice-President Mike Pence’s chief of staff Nick Ayers is expected to take the job.
Adding to the chronicles of presidential embarrassments was a story on Friday that his golf resorts employed undocumented immigrants, including a housekeeper who lacked legal status in America cleaning his toilet and making his bed. At the risk of being deported, a housekeeper who was hired by a Trump estate on the basis of phony papers, spoke to the New York Times to say she was hurt by the president’s comments equating Latin American immigrants with violent criminals.
