NOIDA: Traffic police have recommended suspending for three months the driving licences of 900 Noida residents for jumping signals. All these traffic offences were recorded in August and September this year.
Of these 900, the transport department issued notices to 638 violators on Friday, giving them a week’s time to hand over their licences. The others had been issued notices before that.

Should the notices be ignored, parking attendants and traffic cops will be authorised to seize these vehicles — both registration number and the violator’s name are on the list — if they are spotted. The list will be shared with parking personnel too, officials said.

“Under the guidelines of the Supreme Court committee on road safety, names of violators involved jumping a traffic signal have been shared with the department. The committee has directed that licences can be suspended in case a commuter indulges in violations like jumping a signal, drunken driving, speeding and wrong-side driving,” SP (traffic) Anil Jha said.

ARTO (enforcement) Himesh Tiwari said that he had received the list and the department would suspend the licences for three months. Though Tiwari said that the list was being made public, it was not put up on the transport or police websites.

Tiwari clarified that the action would only be taken against the person driving when the violation was recorded. For instance, if a car is owned by one person but was caught jumping a signal when a friend was driving it, it is the friend whose licence will be suspended.

The vehicle, though, might still get seized if the notice is ignored.

“Then the department will be forced to seize the vehicle. It will be ensured that if this vehicle is found to be parked anywhere, it will be seized,” he said.
