IIT-M sees record no. of job offers in placement season

888 offers made by 195 companies at the end of phase 1 of exercise

A record 888 offers were made to students of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras during the first session of campus placement this academic year.

The session that ended on Saturday saw 195 companies offering jobs. The most number of offers (80%) were made to students of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Engineering Design.

As many as 136 pre-placement offers were made, taking the total to 1,024.

Phase 2 in Jan.

In 2014-15, the institute received 1,019 offers, including for MBA students. This year’s statistics do not include offers made to MBA students.

The second phase will begin mid-January.

Around 1,300 students registered for campus placements.

More than 490 job profiles from nearly 326 companies were received during phase I of placements, held from December 1 to 8.

As many as 195 of these registered companies visited the campus in the first phase. As many as 844 students have been placed at the end of phase I. Last year, 766 students (114 PPOs) found placement in 195 companies.

Manu Santhanam, Advisor (Placement), IIT Madras, said: “Demand for students in computing and analytics sectors was strong. We expect more core companies to come in phase 2.”

Core jobs

A sector-wise breakup of job offers shows that 39% of the offers (346) were in the core research and development segment, while the information technology sector accounted for 32% (290).

As many as 248 offers (28%) came from the analytics/finance/consulting sector.

Four offers accounting for less than 1% came from the fast moving consumer goods sector.
