Reacting to the incident of a Delhi University student being kidnapped from outside Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College on Thursday, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) said that lawlessness around colleges in DU has become very rampant.
AISA-SPM unit convenor, Neetu, said: “It is already difficult for many young girls to convince their parents to let them study after Class XII. Many get married off before they can complete their graduation. And then if our friends are kidnapped in broad daylight from outside college, it will be difficult for many women to continue their education.”
The students demanded that the police took immediate cognisance of the matter and step up efforts to ensure that the missing student is traced at the earliest. “Patrolling around the area is done just during the DUSU elections. The lackadaisical attitude of the police leads to such incidents,” they alleged.
Madhurima Kundu, AISA DU Secretary said: “The issue of safety of DU students, especially women, should be a matter of serious concern for the DU administration and the city police. But both have disappointed us. AISA will take up the issue and carry forward the struggle to ensure that effective mechanisms are put in place to ensure safety of women students of DU. Also, in no way, will we allow any caging and moral policing of women in the name of safety. We want safety with freedom.”
