AMBERNATH: A youth slapped minister of state for social justice and empowerment Ramdas Athavale here during a Republican Party of India (RPI-A) function on Saturday night. Party workers caught hold of the youth, assaulted him, and handed him over to the police.

The police tightened security as the city was tense after the incident. Athavale had come to address a public rally of the party at Netaji Chowk in Ambernath (west). Police said that Athavale, after completing his speech, was leaving the stage when he was slapped. Angry party workers pounced on the youth almost immediately, said the police.

Police inspector Narendra Patil confirmed the assault on Athavale. The police said they had detained the youth, Pravin Gosavi, but were yet to find out the reason for the attack. As the party has its stronghold in the city, the police beefed up security to avoid any untoward incident.
