Kookaburras dish out 11-0 drubbing to China
The Kookaburras have dominated China in their final Hockey World Cup group game with an 11-0 victory in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar.
Blake Govers’ hat-trick took him to the top of the tournament scoring charts as the world’s top-ranked side came within one goal of equalling their record win over South Africa in 2010, having led 9-0 at the final break.
Tim Brand scored twice with Aran Zalewski, Tom Craig, Jeremy Hayward, Jake Whetton, Dylan Wotherspoon and Flynn Ogilvie also getting on the scoresheet in a ruthless display.
The Kookaburras had already sealed their quarter-final spot and will take momentum into their knockout match, where they’ll play either France, China, Ireland or England on Wednesday night at 10.30pm (AEDT).
‘‘We had a great game today and really gelled together so it was positive,’’ Govers said.
‘‘We just stuck to our game plan. ‘‘We were playing China and had a game plan. That’s it really.’’
Trent Mitton will play his 150th game for Australia in the upcoming quarter-final.
